The 65-style military uniform is a symbol of an era

by:XinXing     2020-08-29
The 65-style military uniform became a symbol of that era in its unique form. It is the longest-equipped military uniform of the People's Liberation Army so far and the largest amount issued. It has also affected the clothing of civilian police, civil aviation, railways and other industries, and even became a national clothing. I am afraid that no country's military uniform has such an impact.

1. The impact of 65-style military uniforms on the clothing of civilian police and other industries

The clothing of the New Chinese People’s Police has been basically the same as the clothing of the People’s Liberation Army since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Due to historical origins, the public security forces once belonged to the military sequence, wearing 50-style military uniforms and wearing the public security forces logo; the people’s police belonging to the public security system, apart from the decorations with their own characteristics, the style of clothing is similar to that of the People’s Liberation Army, but the colors are The difference. After the army replaced the 55-style uniform in 1955, the civilian police also replaced the 55-style uniform.

Affected by the replacement of the 65-style military uniforms by the People's Liberation Army, the Ministry of Public Security wrote a special report to the State Council in March 1966 on the reform of the civilian police's clothing system, proposing that the new civilian police clothing system, technical specifications, and quality are the same as those of the PLA cadres. On July 2, 1966, with the approval of the State Council, the national police implemented this clothing standard.

On August 29, 1966, the Liberation Army Daily announced the decision to change the police:

Reform of Chinese People's Police Clothing

Xinhua News Agency reported on the 27th that the clothing of the Chinese People’s Police, approved by the State Council, will be reformed nationwide from September 1 to 10. The new police clothing style, the shirt is grass green, the pants are navy blue, and they wear a liberation cap, a national flag badge, and a red collar badge. From the date of implementation, the old police clothing will be abolished.

In September 1966, the Type 66 police uniform began to be replaced. The tops of all police clothing are grass green; the bottoms are all navy blue without red trousers, which is the same color as the air force clothing. Cancel the Lenin coat and skirt in the original female police uniform. The clothing styles of all police officers are the same as those of the PLA officers. The cockade is round, with the national flag in the center, with golden wheat ears and gears carved around the flag. The collar badge is the same all-red collar badge as the PLA. After this change, the civilian police clothing is exactly the same as the 65-style military uniform, except for the cap badge, the style, color (same as the Air Force), and collar badge.

Since the police’s clothing system, technical specifications and quality are completely the same as military uniforms, in order to facilitate the production and supply of civilian police clothing, on March 7, 1967, the Ministry of Public Security, the General Staff and the General Logistics Department jointly issued the Notice of Responsibility after the Supply of Police Clothing is Handed over.' It is stipulated that from March 1, 1967, the order, allocation and settlement of police clothing in various provinces and cities shall be handled by the General Logistics Department Factory Management Department. The Second Division of the Military Supplies Department of the former Logistics Department of the Public Security Forces was placed under the leadership of the Factory Management Department of the General Logistics Department and was renamed as the 'Civil Police Clothing Division of the Factory Management Department of the General Logistics Department'. From then on, until the late 1980s, the production and supply of civilian police clothing was always in charge.
After several years of practice, the 66-style police clothing has not distinguished the military and police clothing, and has not highlighted the characteristics of the police, especially the traffic police. The clothing is not clear and the signs are not eye-catching, which brings inconvenience to duty. In order to solve this problem, in January 1972, the State Council approved the Ministry of Public Security's 'Notice on Reforming People's Police Clothing' and made the following reforms:

1. The winter and summer clothing of the police is changed to navy blue to distinguish it from the military. The other clothing of the police, such as hats, coats, raincoats, gloves, etc., are also changed to navy blue. Because the traffic police need to be eye-catching, the summer coat is changed to white, with a large navy brimmed hat and a white cap; the winter coat is the same as other police types (black short leather coats are added to the north of the temperature zone), and white sleeves are worn. Since the fire police have implemented a compulsory military service system, they can still keep the upper green and lower blue unchanged. The styles, technical specifications, and quality of clothing for various policemen are the same as those of the People's Liberation Army, and the required raw materials are included in the national plan.

2. The police cap badge changed from the current national flag pattern to the national emblem pattern. The police collar remains unchanged.

3. The supply standard for police uniforms is the same as the PLA. That is, the civilian police (including the civilian police cadres below the squadron) are the same as the PLA soldiers; the cadres above the civilian police brigade and other public security cadres in clothing are the same as the PLA cadres. Foreign affairs police, traffic police and railway police issued black leather shoes.

Soon, in view of the problem of unclear colors and strong heat absorption of the 72-standard police uniforms, on May 1, 1974, with the approval of the State Council, the police of household registration, public security, criminal, foreign affairs, justice, railway, shipping, etc. From that day on, they all changed to the same white and blue uniforms as the traffic police. Male policemen wear blue big-brimmed hats and female policemen wear blue caps, both with white caps inlaid with Bluetooth cables. Border guards, armed forces, guards, forest and railway escort policemen, summer and winter clothing are changed to the same upper green and lower blue police uniforms as the fire policemen, and they wear grass green hats. All female police stopped issuing liberation hats and changed to wearing beanies. At the same time, additional blue skirts were issued. The civilian police clothing reform is being carried out simultaneously with the PLA’s changing into 74-style military uniforms. The civilian police clothing after reform is very similar to navy clothing.
Apart from the cap badge, the uniforms, technical specifications and quality of the police uniforms are the same as those of the PLA 65-style uniforms. Since July 1, 1976, the types of police in active service such as border defense, fire fighting, and armed forces have been changed to the People's Armed Police, and they still wear the 74-style police uniform in green and blue. After 1983, the armed police and the civilian police changed into 83-style police uniforms one after another, and the police uniforms became a self-contained one, but the red velvet collar was worn until 1990.
In fact, during this period, not only the civilian police clothing was the same as the 65-style military uniform, but even the civil aviation, railway, postal and other industries also imitated the 65-style military uniform.

Before August 1966, there was not much difference between the uniforms of our civil aviation crews and the uniforms of airlines around the world at that time. They were crisp and neat blue wool suits with the logo of China Civil Aviation. At the beginning of the 'Cultural Revolution', it was changed to gray twill military casual clothes. Since 1969, civil aviation has been placed under the military establishment and is under the air force. The civil aviation system pilots, flight attendants, and crews are all wearing 65-style air force upper and lower green uniforms, and they are not worthy of a badge or cap badge. It was changed to a gray uniform in the mid-1970s.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the female flight attendants wore a sky blue uniform, a lapel, a single-breasted western-style jacket with brass buttons, and a pair of 'tubs.' The pilot wore a large brimmed hat and a dark blue tunic uniform. The clothing system is still very similar to military uniforms.
